In June, we passed another milestone in the triumph of digital media as the world’s oldest daily newspaper, the Vienna-based Wiener Zeitung, cancelled its print edition for an online model, cut 65 positions (including 35 editors), and promised to return to print with a monthly edition, should their government subsidized finances stabilize. First published on August 8, 1703, Wiener Zeitung produced 116,840 editions and survived “320 years, 12 presidents, 10 emperors, [and] 2 republics.” In a last-gasp tribute to the form, the final edition features a layout impossible to replicate in digital space, with letter-shaped columns of text above the fold spelling out the paper’s “ENDE”:
