Congrats on finding your home! I'm convinced every writer should have a visual or musical outlet that we don't take too seriously, or no longer do. Being trained to draw in college still informs my writing process in profound and unexpected ways
Yes, totally agree! And with that, I wish there were more inclusive small artist communities (maybe salons?) with people working in various disciplines. We all could be great resources for each other
I've been joking for years that I want to start a "band" with local artists of other disciplines that I can "jam" with weekly. I just want to write while someone across the room is painting, and someone else is strumming a guitar, and we take smoke breaks to talk about our work and inspire each other. But you're absolutely right, the word I'm looking for is "salon" 😂 The internet can never replace this experience
Congrats on your new home! I do collage as a hobby, and you're exactly right about the way it allows us to get out of our heads. I find it so relaxing to work intuitively and allow myself not to second guess decisions in the same way that I do when trying to write poems. As you said, it's a great way to rest from language while also experiencing the pleasure of making something new. Thanks for this!
Thank you, Allison! For me collage is also great because it easily lends to following our curiosities and seeking surprises instead of pursuing the initial vision/idea we had. Relaxing and fun.
Love the idea of using collage to reframe and unpack creative energy. It's easy to forget, as you point out, that the high really does come from making something new. And it can be so nice to get away from words for a while. Thank you for this invitation to reset, Andrea!

Yep, sometimes I/we need to step away from words a bit to kinda rekindle that relationship we have with language and sound.
--great post, Andrea. So happy you found a home. And I love the comparison between collage and poetry. Yours turned out lovely
Thanks, LuLu. Hope we can connect in person sometime this year!
--yes, let’s!
